for those who have completed there b.a this year and preparing for master.

i think that you all have enough time to prepare so prepare in a way that will help you not only in cracking masters entrance but also doing well in masters.....for this you must read the topics that you feel relevant for entrance from masters level book..... ....dont ever leave any problem...just thinking that this is high level problem this wont come.... try to do that also... tish approach will make sure that you get through with entrance well....

all the best to all m.a. aspirants

And i must say fabulous job Amit.

Coaching is not required for MA Entrance. If you solve four to five new problems a day (the ones that you haven't seen before), it is sufficient. Past year exams are a good source of problems.

Anushka, There is no such book that provides tricks. The reason is that the trick is simple. And it is read carefully. People who cleared the exam also read the same book. So, I guess you need to change the way you study instead of book.

Having a good knowledge of statistics is necessary to do econometrics. Doing Freund will help you improve your concepts in Statistics.
I have no idea of Satya Chakroborty's book on Microeconomics. Use past year DSE and ISI exams. They are a very good source of problems. In addition you may also use course material of relevant courses posted on http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/economics/

Soumya, Most problems you study in Economics are Optimization problems, for example: Profit maximization problem of the firm, Utility maximization problem of the consumer, etc. Optimization Techniques and Economics Dynamics will give you necessary tools to solve these problems. And yes the knowledge of these will help you in reading papers from top journals like AER, QJE, etc. You need to have a very good understanding of high school mathematics to be able to do and understand these books.

Rahul, As long as you know and understand the topics listed in both these books very well, from which book you do them doesn't matter.

hi,

I wish to know the standard of PhD program me in top Economics School in India.

# Is their coursework as rigorous as their western counterpart?

# How much research oriented they are?

# Do they generally force candidate to come up with original idea or a PhD can be completed in "INDIAN WAY"?
# what is the placement record of such candidate not corporate one but academics?

# Research standard is pathetic and below standard....they(faculty) are enjoying the fruits of their Phd from western universities and nothing else....how true

Reply
Amit

Hi Apurva,

I would say that the top programs in the West are better than top programs in India for pursuing PhD on most fronts. The coursework in top universities in US will be more rigorous compared to that in India. There are more advantages like wide range of fields are available to pick from if you do it at a top place in US, better infrastructure, etc.

All PhD programs are research oriented.

In a PhD Program no one forces a student to do anything. Its the student who has to show patience and consistency to come up with an interesting idea. And this is the case everywhere no matter from where you do it. The PhD program at top schools in India, for example DSE and ISI, have produced many top researchers in the field.

Placement is more affected by the kind of research student do and not so much by the university from where he do it.

Research standards are also good in top places in India.

In DSE , book by John Stachurski is referred for Dynamics. Below is the link to the same

http://johnstachurski.net/book/book.html

My personal opinion about J & R is that its for sure much more mathematical as compared to Varian (that too intermediate version). If you ae not able to solve the problems at the end of the chapters then probably you have not understood the concepts clearly. So, work on the definitions and then problems

You may start with Varian, its relatively more technical than the intermediate varian but J & R has a higher level. But this can help you to understand concepts and application.

There is no particular prerequisite to understand dynamics. This book which I mentioned starts with very basic and has a step by step approach.

@Nishant

Linear Algebra - "linear algebra done wrong" by sergie treil"
Real Analysis - : "Fundamental concepts of analysis" by alton smith and walter albrect

I can not guide you for option B, please refer to the past year papers.

Both ISI and DSE are very good for research in econometric applications. But if you want to do econometric theory then i will recommend applying to suitable programs in US or UK.

I completed my masters work in economics in 10'...And I wrote my GRE and completed all formalities...I got accepted in doctorate program at University of Maryland....But I dropped out and worked instead....I want to know that if I decide to do my PhD.D at a good Indian institute DSE/ISI/IGIDR wouldn't that be OK..

I really want to do my doctorate here but at the same time don't want to compromise on quality....My interest lies in Business Cycle/Financial Eco/monetary policy

Hi,
First a great thanks to the team for taking such unique initiative. The range and quality of questions responded here is really distinguished. I have recommended this web link to many of my friends who want to explore deeply the field of economics.
My question is related to the math preparation for the Doctoral level work in Economics. I have searched extensively on web and concluded that PhD programme at Top Ivy League universities in US have very “TOUGH” math requirement. They emphasis on graduate level work in mathematics .And the topics are:
Single and Multi-Variable Calculus
Mathematical Analysis
Linear Algebra
Topology
Differential Equation
Mathematical Statistics
Econometrics
Apart from the last two topics I don’t think even the best Economics school (read ISI, DSE…) gives training on the topics mentioned above. May be the topics are loosely integrated in their courswork but no special emphasis. Grad school in US consider those application who are well trained in mathematics.
I will start my Master’s work this year. Pls guide how shall I compensate for the Great Maths Requirment as I want to be an academician and that too in a top institute. I am very much clear about it.
Thanks
Gaurang Sandilya

To understand what they cover in masters, you need to do masters. The subjects/topics you listed (all of them) are cover well enough (at top masters' programs in India like DSE and ISI) to prepare you for doctoral studies in any top program.

Pls find this question necessary from my career point of view and reply as early as possible.

Deep, You have to write both ME-I and ME-II for ISI.

Raj, I don't think IGIDR publishes their past year exams.
I don't think anyone has prepared any answer key for JNU past years. You may use forum on this website to discuss them.

Varun, I don't think there will be any problem as long as your univ is recognized by the UGC. But still you might want to go to DSE and confirm.

Research in Economics and Management both require a similar tool kit. Masters in Economics from DSE or ISI or any other institute of repute in India equip you very well with the necessary tools for pursuing research. Even though your interest is management and not Economics I still feel that you will find yourself better placed to handle research in management after pursuing a masters in economics than a masters in some business management program.

Hi apra

For the entrance exam, you are expected to know the topics at undergraduate level. The distributions you have mentioned are done at masters level. Once you are through with your preparations and you have some time left , you may do them.

IIT madras offers MA in economics, but it's an integrated 5 year course. For further details you may check with their website?

Hi Rahul, Refer the handbook on DSE's website or contact DSE for questions related to eligibility.
To prepare, refer the books in bold for the following topics:

1. Intermediate Micro Economics by H. Varian Relevant chapters are the following: The Market, Budget Constraint, Preferences, Utility, Choice, Demand, Revealed Preference, Slutsky Equation, Buying and Selling, Intertemporal Choice, Consumer's Surplus, Market Demand, Equilibrium, Exchange, Production, Welfare, Externalities, Public Goods, Mathematical Appendix
Also do Workouts in Intermediate Microeconomics by Bergstrom and Varian.

2. Macro Economic Theory and Policy by Branson Relevant chapters are the following: Introduction to Income Determination: The Multiplier, Demand-Side Equilibrium: Income and the Interest rate, An introduction to Monetary and Fiscal Policy, Supply-Side Equilibrium: Output and the Price level, Equilibrium in the Static Model, Monetary, Fiscal and Incomes Policy in the Static Model

3. Macro Economics by Dornbusch, Fischer and Startz Relevant chapters are the following: Income and Spending, Money, Interest and Income, Monetary and Fiscal Policy, International Linkages, Aggregate Demand and Supply: An Introduction, Aggregate Supply: Wages, Prices and Employment, The Demand for Money, Dynamics of Inflation and Unemployment, Tradeoffs between Inflation and Unemployment, International Adjustment and Interdependence

4. Mathematical Statistics by Freund Relevant chapters are the following: Introduction, Probability, Probability Distributions and Probability Densities, Mathematical Expectation, Special Probability Distributions, Special Probability Densities, Functions of Random Variables, Sampling Distributions, Hypothesis Testing: Theory, Hypothesis Testing: Applications, Regression and Correlation

5. Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis by Sydsaeter and Hammond

Once you are done with above, you might want to do some advanced level books but this is strictly optional. The texts mentioned below provides the advanced treatment of topics mentioned in the lists above.

1a. Advanced Micro Economic Theory by Jehle and Reny AND/ OR 1b. Microeconomic Analysis by H. Varian

2. Basic Econometrics by Gujarati

3. Foundations of Modern Macroeconomics by Heijdra

4. Probability and Statistics by DeGroot

5. Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis by Sydsaeter and Hammond

My suggestion to you will be that read your textbooks carefully and learn to apply what you read through problem solving. Spend lot of time on problem solving. The website has lots of problems to help you in your preparation.

Hi,
First of all I would like to thank you for this initiative which is genuinely dedicated to counseling students interested in making a career in Economics. The array of questions entertained here is out of the box and I haven’t seen the seriousness with which these have been responded anywhere else.

I am an Economics graduate and have been in teaching in various coaching institute since last one decade or so. The current turbulent in global economy has raised my curiosity to understand the subject at advance level.
My question is given my current age(33)

• Will I be accepted as a candidate?….I have seen the prospectus I fullfil the academic requirement of all the top schools like DSE,ISI,IGIDR etc..Nothing is mentioned about age restriction in any of the institute.

• Will I be eligible for placement in both public/private sector enterprises? Given the fact that I was in the teaching business but not in organized sector( I taught in coaching institutes)

I am genuinely passionate about pursuing the Master’s work. My only concern is the two questions mentioned above….please guide

THANKS A LOT

Hi Sandeep,

Thanks for all the appreciation.
I don't think age is any concern. If you clear the entrance exam, you will be accepted as a candidate. Regarding placements you will certainly be allowed to sit for placements but how much your age and experience will affect your selection that I cannot say. This is decided by the recruiter.

Best wishes.

Hi

Future prospects of masters in economics from jmi are narrow both in terms of academics and corporate jobs. The dept has recently switched from annual to semester system, but still the course structure can not be compared to other universities in Delhi. Apart from that, the dept does not have a placement cell ( though the university has one). The overall exposure in the university is good due to educational events and festivals which take place round the year.

Hi Smriti, MA (Development Economics) from SAU is a good program.
If you do Masters in Economics from DSE or any other reputed place then you have to choose a specialization in second year. Generally, the choice involves specializing in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Development Economics, Econometrics, Industrial Organization etc or any mix of them. This choice is either missing or limited to courses related to development economics in a program offered by SAU. However, since the program is Masters in Development Economics you will get to study Development Economics in great depth. It is like Masters in Economics with specialization in Development Economics

I have already answered this in one of the earlier posts. MA (Dev Eco) is MA(Eco) with specialization in Dev Eco. In every MA(Eco) program one has to opt for a specialization. Its just that student pursuing MA(Eco) can opt for the specialization of his choice, here you have no choice but to specialize in Dev Eco. Since the program offered by SAU is new, I am not sure what kind of response will it receive in the market. But the faculty at SAU is good. You can learn a lot in that program. I am not aware of the MA program offered by Ambedkar University. So, I can't comment on it.

Besides basic MS Office, I suggest you may choose to acquire some programming skills by learning C++ and having a working knowledge of any of the following statistical software can be a plus: Advanced Excel, Python, R, Matlab, STATA, E Views, SAS.

Osborne’s Tutorial: Mathematical Methods (http://www.economics.utoronto.ca/osborne/MathTutorial/IND.HTM)
The Calculus Lifesaver: All The Tools You Need To Excel At Calculus by Adrian Banner

Mini, Just check the author's name. If its the same for both then its very unlikely that they are different.

Deepak, Freund is enough but if you want more practice then you may also do Probability and Statistics by DeGroot.

Priya, The books you listed are very good for concept building and entrance preparations.

1.What are the no. of seats available at DSE for the MA Economics programme?

Hi,
My name is Alex and I live in Spain. With the emergence of Asia in general and India in particular as a center of new economic activates it’s important for someone to understand what exactly happening in such market. I wish to work in India and accentuate my career as an Emerging market expert. Moreover the cost of education in western countries apart from my own (Thanks to Great Policy of our government and GREAT GREEK CRISIS) is getting beyond the reach of people belonging to middle class like me. This led me to take a decision about educating myself in India where it is of high quality and pretty much affordable. I did some research and am impressed by the course structure of MSQE program of ISI/ M.A ECO (DSE) .

I wish to know the SEMESTER WISE books/required readings (research paper) used in the institute. If you could let me know this it would be of immense help. I can prepare myself about the perquisites and some electives.
.
Waiting for the response

Thanks

Hi Alex,
Coursework at DSE or ISI is comparable to masters program at LSE or NYU or any other other top univ. The subjects and the references are also standard like Microeconomic Theory by Mascollel etc, Macroeconomic Theory by Romer, Real Analysis with Economic Applications by Efe Ok, Probability and Statistics by Degroot.

Hi Niharika,
Simon and Blume is a good substitute.

Hi Rahul,

Both the books are good and complete with respect to the topics you are expected to know for entrance preparations. So you may not do the other if you have done one of them. However, It is not a bad idea to refer the book by Sydsaeter and Hammond for additional exercises (if you need more practice).

Abhishek,

hi,

here is a brief intro to the work profile of IES and IAS officers.

Under IES the selected candidates join the service as Group 'A'
Officers. It is a Central Government Exam. The IES officers are placed
in the Planning Commission, Planning Board, Ministry of Economic
Affairs, National Sample Survey and other allied offices/departments
that need specialists on economic and statistics. They are trained in
economic analysis, policy formulation and its implementation. The role
of the IES can be broadly categorized in terms economic advice,
economic administration besides dealing with other areas such as
economic reforms, regulation, price fixation, and monitoring and
evaluation. Constitution of the service was essentially to build
capacity within the Government for rendering economic advice on issues
of development policy and for playing an active role in economic
administration.

The service conditions offered by the IES are similar to Civil
Services. The place of posting is usually in New Delhi. A candidate
selected at a favourable age can expect to rise quite high in the
career and touch the level of even Secretary to the Government of
India, in any Ministry concerned with economic affairs.

A civil servant is responsible for the law & order and general
administration in the area under her work.Typically
she handles the daily affairs of the government, including framing
and implementation of policy at micro level ( a district ) supervision
of on going various development programmes in terms of expenditure
made and implementation.

Nobody can say which one is better, it totally depends on your preferences and skill set as to which of the two suits you better!

Since the pattern of DSE papers has changed post 2003, it would suffice to do the available e copies of the past year exams.

However, the hard copies of the above mentioned papers are available at DSE. For more information on e copies you could contact DSE or some one who has a hard copy could scan it for you.

* If I decide to continue further (Ph.D) will I be eligible for the teaching job?

Dear Amit Sir ,

I am at present a final year student of BA ( pol science )from IGNOU and will be completing my studies by the end of JUNE,2013. I am very much eager to study for MA economics entrance of DSE ,JNU . After , giving a look at previous year entrance paper of DSE and JNU, my inner voice says that I can crack these exams , if I devote one year completely for it . So , I am planning to sit for 2014 exam.

But , my problem is that after my 12th in science , I couldn't continue my studies , due to my family problem and I had to enroll for BA in the year 2011 . Will these study gap and my age ( I will be 27 in 2014)pose some problem to get admission ?My another fear is my final graduation mark .I have consistently scored 58% in every year and I am trying hard to get above 60 % in my final total score . In case,if I get around 58 % ,will I be able to sit for DSE entrance, considering the fact that I am from ST community of North East ,India.

Sir, I will be highly grateful to you if you reply to my query.

Amit

I think 60% is required for eligibility. But given that your application will be considered under ST category, you might be given some relaxation. Please confirm with someone at DSE.
Regarding your age gap issues, you need not worry about them. Do well in the exam and they will take you.

Also , How is CDS , Tiruvantapuram for MA applied economics , as it was formed by Late. K . N .Raj ; one of Indias best economist . I want to sit for IES exam in the future , and DSE , JNU , CDS and MSE are my choice . Apart from DSE , how are the other institutes in providing holistic approach to Indian Economy , Global economy and also Economic policy making.

Hi Prerna,

Janaki

To your query, and for anybody who has similar doubts.

Regrading preparation for maths definitely polish your high school mathematics. Apart from that you should look into Alpha Chiang, Simon and Blume, Michael Hoy. Also brush up on a bit of real analysis (you never know what they might ask!) along with statistics and probability for which you can refer to Degroot and Freund. Give the ISI and DSE PHD qualifier exams a try for probability and statistics. Nevertheless the paper will be objective so it's always relatively easier to work with options - that's a breather.

For economics do the varian workbook from cover to cover. For more sophisticated presentation of graduate topics you can refer to Microeconomic Analysis by Hal Varian and Branson for Macroeconomics.

Considering the fact that IGIDR course is very focused on econometric application of various topics and involves learning a couple of softwares, I would recommend that its harmless to brush up under graduate level econometrics.

Hi Rohit,

I am not aware of the precise cut offs but in my view a score of 50 out of 100 had mostly been a safe score in all the past entrances of DSE. A safe score is a score above which the chances of not getting an offer are negligible.

It depends you are more inclined towards pure mathematical approach of economics(DSE the course is basically inclined towards micro and maths ..macro is not taught much) while in IGIDR they focus more on financial economics .everything is taught but I am here talking about institute's inclination.
Also if you want to clear NET DSE is best place. You can get placement in both the college, doesnt matter much.

For list of top MA programs refer the programs page of this site. Most forms comes out in January. Sir, I am In 2nd year doing BA(Eco) from Madras university.
My semester syllabus and pattern is quite different from DU.
Can you suggest me what to start with for my 2015 entrance preparation. I desire to be in DSE or JNU.
Also can you tell me which one is better to pursue in masters, MA in economics or MBE from delhi university .?
Thank you sir.

Hi Shobhit,

MBE and MA(econ) are two different programs. I suggest you find out about the two programs (through prospectus, internet, past students or any other source) and see which program is a better fit for your future goals.

Hi Aryan,

Preparation time depends upon your hold on Mathematics. If your high school mathematics is strong then the preparation will be paced better.

In general, 1 year of dedicated preparation should suffice.

Sir,

Thanks for your worthy reply.

I followed your mentioned link but the dillema is that I'm preparing for ISI (QE) and the syllabus is different from other institutes....

1. I was going thru microeconomics book by Nicholson but most of them have recommended me Microeconomic analysis by Varian + alpha chiang for economics problems.
2. The syllabus on ISI site is not detailed which makes it difficult from me to understand what chapters to go through in the above mentioned books

I would be really glad if you may take some time out and help me with chapters I should go through from above books both for theory and questions as being from Civil background it is a bit difficult for me to understand scope of the syllabus.

I would also like to add that i have a pretty good hold in maths but really concerned in terms of prepration in right direction

Help in same context for macroeconomics would be really appreciated.

Thanks

If you want to do Microeconomic Analysis by Varian then all the chapters must be done except the ones on Asset markets and Information.

Hi Hassan,

I think 6-8 months are sufficient to prepare for entrances. Syllabus is provided at several places on this site, you may proceed accordingly. It is very important to solve problems. A good source of problems is past year exams available on lessons page of this site and forum where students discuss lots of problems from various sources.

it is talking about a competitive market, so firms should earn normal profit. So, p.y - 4.x=0. putting y=2x in this , we get 2p=4 ( note that wages are 4 in this case).p=100-2y as given. so 200 - 4y = 4. y comes out to be 49. so labor should be 49/2 that is 25
note, labor can't be in decimals.

Hi Gurleen,

MPhil is a research program where you are expected to write some original piece of work. The set of acceptable research work you can write for MPhil (Development Studies) is, in principle, different from the set of acceptable work for MPhil (Economics). There are possible intersections but given your interests I would recommend doing MPhil in Economics.

Best colleges in Delhi are:
Jawaharlal Nehru University
Indian Statistical Institute (Delhi)
Delhi School of Economics

Now is the best time to start preparations. If you have made up your mind then the earlier you start preparing the better it is for you.

You are eligible to write these entrances while your are in your third year and also you remain eligible after completing your third year. For details regarding the scores eligibility refer the prospectus of the respective institutes.

At present DSE accepts a student if he/she qualify either on the basis of his/her performance in entrance exam (entrance-basis) or on the basis of his/her performance in the undergraduate program (merit-basis).

Hi,

I a preparing for M.A. Eco and my main focus is IGIDR. Can you please tell me how many seats are there in IGIDR for Msc Eco as it is not mentioned on their website or in the last year's prospectus. There are no previous year papers of IGIDR on this website. Can you tell me where can I get those from.
Also I need some help with the preparation as the structure of this exam is a little different from other exams. Please tell me about the level of analytical questions asked. Are they similar to the questions asked in CAT. How should i go about preparing for it? For the basic mathematics section, is the maths of 11th and 12th standard sufficient or more preparation is required?

Does the economics section of this exam require preparation just like DSE and other exams or the difficultly level is different. Please suggest how should I prepare for that.
I know these are a lot of questions but I will be really thankful if you can answer all the questions as they are really imp for me.

For the basic Math section, knowledge of high school math should suffice.
For the economics section, preparation is similar to what is needed to be done for DSE and ISI.

Sir, my son is studying in std. XI science. He is willing pursue higher education in economics. His current subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English. His Jr. College is ready to switch his stream from science to commerce in std. XII. But in that case he will have Business Maths (Some sort of lower grade/ diluted). Kindly suggest which stream will be appropriate for std. XII.
I have searched the net for best ug econimics colleges. Found that the reputed colleges are very few and they are having sky roketting cut-offs. Please suggest me other tier 2 institutes for ug studies with best faculty and curriculum.

Hi Vasundhra,

One year is a lot of time to plan and do well in entrances. If you want to prepare on your own, there are resources available on this website that can be helpful. If you need coaching, you may write to me at amit.kr.goyal@gmail.com and I will send you the details of the program I offer.

I am doing Bachelor in Mass Communication, and oddly I want to pursue MA in economics.. I have no knowledge of economics, can't even stand The Business Line or other economics newspaper or magazine. But economics fascinates, partly because I don't understand it. Also, because I want to build a career in Policymaking, and some degree of knowledge in economics will be required anyhow.

But looking at previous years papers of DU entrance, and what people are saying about DSE online.. am not sure if I should risk studying for it. Kindly help

Sir ,

I am a final year BA economics student who doesn't belongs to the mathematics background during the higher secondary education. But I had opted mathematics as my open paper during my 5 th semester of degree. Sir my doubt is that can I compensate the Higher secondary mathematics eligibility with my open paper in mathematics during degree for appearing for entrence examinations for MA in economics as the prestigious economic institutions ask for mathematics as an eligibility for post graduation in economics.

Expecting your kind reply
